“The Mourner” is a film adaptation of Arata Tendo’s 2008
Naoki-Prize winning novel of the same name. This drama details the journey of a mysterious young man, Shizuto Sakatsuki (Kengo Kora) who wanders the country mourning those who have died from crimes and accidents. The Mourner attempts to connect to these dead. Yukiyo Nagi (Yuriko Ishida) has a dark past and after finding and connecting with Shizuto follows him on his journey. A grim and gritty coverage reporter Kotaro Makino (Kippei Shiina) meets Shizuto Sakatsuki and questions his motives and begins to investigate his past and those close to him for an answer on why he mourns for others. At the end, everything reverts to the ultimate question: how do we wish to live our lives?

不慮の死を遂げた人々を〈悼む〉ために日本全国を旅している青年、坂築静人（高良健吾）。死者が生前「誰に愛され、愛したか、どんなことをして人に感謝されていたか、その生きている姿を覚えておく」ための静人なりの儀式は、周囲からは奇異の目で見られるものの、一方で人々の「生」と「愛」に対する考え方に大きな影響を与えていく。一方で、静人の実家では母・巡子（大竹しのぶ）が末期癌に侵され、今まさに死を迎えようとしていた。静人は、そして彼をめぐる人々は、生きる意味と、真実の愛を見つけることができるのだろうか。
